This thread is about another class of survival guns............... |
Re: Ben on steroids
Maybe I should have titled this thread "Dan on steroids".
Hint: Benjamin/Sheridan Tim at Mac1 has been souping them up for many years. I bought my first real airgun, a Feinwerkbau (FWB) Model 124, from Tim maybe 30 years ago. That's a guess. I believe I got the FWB when their Model 124 was first introduced, so that's a way to check. Years later I gave this classic barrel cocker to my business partner. Now I have three Sheridan C9A pump rifles. One is stock, two are on steroids. More later about these later, if anyone is interested. Last time I visited Tim at his shop was maybe four or five years ago. I hope he is still in business. dtnwn |
Re: Ben on steroids
Sam,
Sorry boss, but I've been under the weather for about the past week. When I feel good enough to get out of bed, I like to surf the web and GIM IS one of my first stops. This is the first time I have been out of bed today. Ben on steriods is a GREAT way to go. Doesn't it bump up the overall FPS? Still shooting the .17 cal pellet? How much was the work that was done OR how much for one already pumped up? I own one Ben/Sher already. Disassembled it, did a trigger job, COMPLETELY refinished the stock. Sanded down to wood and then hand rubbed four coats of laquer. The stock looks about 1000% better than the way they come from the factory. The funny part is they use pretty good wood, but then just spray the finish on instead of the more labor intensive hand rubbing. Go figure. GOOD score if you ask me. |
Re: Ben on steroids
Hi wallew-
Sorry to hear you were sick.. Yup Tim's modifications increase power a lot. His steroid job allows most of ten or more pumps of air to actually escape the air chamber and push the pellet through the barrel. Tim mounted a Williams aperture sight on one of my steroid Dans. I talked him into mounting a .22 cal type Bushnell 3-9 zoom on my other steroid Dan. I don't think he makes it known that he will do this mod. There isn't a place with enough meat to drill and tap for a mount. His solution was to epoxy a custom made mount to the barrel. The stock bolt handle must be replaced with a custom version because the scope prevents it from lifting high enough to cock the action. Also the mount restricts access to the port for loading a pellet. In other words, Tim doesn't think it's a terribly elegant way to mount glass sights on Sheridans, but hey it works great! (I just looked, apparently these days he will create a dovetail mount.) Click on [Steroid airgun] There are bunch more links at the top of the "Steroid" page. Mac1 BTW- Years ago I chamfered the firing pin hole at the bolt face of my MK IV/Series 70 .45 Cal. This didn't eliminate smoke-stacking but it helped reduce it a lot. Is this a standard tune up procedure? Or maybe it's not a problem if one hasn't tightened up the slide. I don't worry about jambs now, as a stock S&W 9mm is what I keep handy. dtnwn |
Re: Ben on steroids
Not exactly the same thing, but I've been into pneumatic cannons for a while. You can build them in all different sizes, since your operating pressure is limited by the strength of your barrel and resovoir and most people use pvc it isn't wise to go over 100psi so you increase power by going to a larger bore. I've built some really mean ones using exhaust valve technology and lately I've been thinking about doing a double barreled cannon with a 1" bore made to be fired from the shoulder. I'd use it for hunting small and medium game. These aren't exactly silent weapons but they are relatively quiet and don't sound like guns.
